LogMeIn.Com

There's some really great tools provided by the folks at LogMeIn.com. I've been pleased with their trial version of Pro, and find their free home products just as useful. If you are a home user who needs to stay connected to your computers while abroad, this product will do it with a minimum fuss.
The account setup and registration is easy, and there is no configuration to do to your local machine other than install a small client which runs in the background. You log in to your LogMeIn.com account from any Internet connected computer and you will be able to see your computer's local screen with intuitive tools and features for remote manipulation.
There is a free VPN style program called Hamachi, connecting you to files and media on your home computer as well. I would use this on something like your personal laptop, as it is installs on each computer, rather than just being a web interface.
The paid products are powerful and worth the money. Required for commercial use, your IT dept would easily benefit from being able utilize these tools.

Free Software

I've always been interested in free software and periodically browse the Internet for tools I need, but can't afford.
I've come across an interesting phenomenon in cyberspace. A secret society actively creating and publishing free software for the benefit of all. These benefactors are rarely seen in broad daylight, yet they toil endlessly on the idea that software is like an idea.
If someone has a good idea and shares it with another, the idea is not devalued, in fact, it often grows in strength, empowering others by evolving their way of thinking or being added to for even greater effect. Software is like this. It's entirely possible we are facing a paradigm shift in the not too distant future in which we realize that programs are not devalued when freely shared. They are often used in many ways that enhance our way of life. Also, developers often improve on the product and pass it on.
I lack the skills to keep this movement rolling, except for providing props for those faceless cyber geeks. I promote their products whenever the chance presents itself because they have the ability to make us not only money, but better people with their example of giving.
There's several kinds of people out there. The all-for-profit crowd, the detriment to society crowd and the heroes who seldom receive what they deserve in credit or financial compensation. Donate to your benefactors if you can, promote them either way.

Facebook

I'm almost ashamed to be enjoying Facebook. I'm not that social, either online or in person. I rather like being alone and social networking online never grabbed me because of its chancy nature.
I am enjoying the status updates, poking fun at friend's and family's statements and receiving in return. I'm not so much into the games yet, I've got too much work to do to put time into that just now. I'd like to figure out how to expand my network so I can contact people in places I've lived. Doesn't seem to be that easy, especially if, like me, you don't remember peoples names that easily. And I don't have their emails, or there would be no need to get back in touch. Oh well.
